I wasn't sure which section to post this on so hopefully I will be able to get a response.
I am interested in buying a sampler. I am primarily into experimental music. Not into "groove" or dance DJ type stuff. Ideally I'm looking for something that will allow me to go out and find sounds and then be able to add effects and play it back using a midi keyboard controller (I would like to get a multi-sampler). Does anyone have an recommendations? I have found some that have specs that look interesting but I would greatly appreciate hearing an actual opinion from someone.

I am afraid there isn't a single device that would meet all your requirements while providing professional quality.

I would suggest you split your task into two: mobile recording and further processing/composition. For this, at the lowest budget (but without compromise), I'd recommend you Edirol R-09HR for doing recordings anywhere you go (it has excellent, high-grade electret mikes built-in), and a then a keyboard sampler with effects. For the latter, I'd recommend you a Roland V-Synth - there is simply nothing on the planet that can do such wild yet musical treatment to the samples, from spectral resynthesis to endless effects processing via resampling.

But if you still want an all-in one box, have a look at the new Roland SP-404SX. Although I am not sure about the quality of it's internal microphone.
