Hey all, I just got an mbox2 mini, and i wanted to know how i can use my fantom within protools or other software like logic. What i've tried to do so far is, i've got output 1/2 going to my studio monitors, and i tried output 3 TRS to TRS input on the mbox mini......i open up a new track on protools and it wont recognize the fantom or play any sounds back....Can anyone help? Do i have to have a USB connected as well???
Also when i do get the sound in protools, I dont want to just record myself playing the fantom, i want to be able to get the sounds from the fantom into protools and be able to edit the notes via the midi editor.....how can i do this???
Thanks in advance

Not that this is your problem, but output 3 is unbalanced. Also, should be noted, the balanced input on the Mbox isn't TRS, rather XLR.
More likely your sounds in Fantom-G are not routed there, nor AFAIK, can they be output to 1+2 and 3 at the same time.
Most logical way would be to plug your monitors into the interface as intended. If you sometime decide you need a balanced mono recording, you'll need a TRS -> XLR cable for channel 1.
Hope that helps.

So your saying that the only way to connect my fantom to the mbox would be through the mic input via XLR? Which output would i use on the fantom? I have a XLR to 1/4 cable...XLR=Mbox, 1/4=fantom...which output? Also should i use the usb as well???

Ok, to confirm I actually looked up the Mbox 2 Mini manual. I'm not sure what I was looking at before, but it accepts TRS in both input 1 and 2. Sorry about that.
So, forget the earlier bit. You can use TRS-TRS from output 1+2 on your G.
Still for the monitor part, if you are using the Mbox, you should use the monitor outputs.
In this scenario, USB on the Fantom would be mainly for the MIDI. Although, you could also use USB audio for sampling.
Hope that makes more sense ;)

Yes it makes a lot more sense, i got my monitors going into the mono outs on the mbox mini, and for the output on the fantom do i have to use both output 1 & 2 to go into input 1 on the fantom?? I'm asking do i need a snake cable with 2 TRS on one side and 1 TRS on the other? OR are you saying i just use either output 1 or 2 on the fantom to go into mbox input 1 via TRS to TRS?
Because i've tried that and i cant get a reading on my protools....does usb need to be connected to the computer as well??? Do i have to initiate something in protools?
Thanks again in advance dbijoux

Good, good, glad to hear is more sensible now.
It sounds like you've got it hooked up right. Yes, plug both outputs into both inputs - they are all TRS(balanced) design. Then you can record stereo patches, etc.
I don't run ProTools so you might have to make another specific post here or elsewhere.
For the time being, don't worry about USB, until you get everything recording right. We've already somewhat confirmed your Fantom outputs are fine and you're using right cables to plug into the Mbox. The next step would be figuring out what's happening between the interface and PT. I wouldn't imagine any problems since they are integral to each other. Can you playback from your computer(from PT?) through the monitor outs? Maybe it's as simple as selecting the proper input channel?

Ok yeah i got it, i had to have TRS from output 1 & 2 into input 1 & 2 on the mbox, and you have to open up an AUX track and an instrument track in order to play the sounds from the fantom and edit in the midi window....This was pretty complicated and also had to set local off on the fantom....

Good news! Yeah there are few extra steps if you are sequencing MIDI and tracking audio.
Enjoy.
