Is it possible to use another keyboard to control the Motif rack via midi cable and then run into the G left line input to record audio but still be able to use the G''s features like arp, chord memory, etc...Am I off track? I am trying to figure out how to effectively control the Motif and use it and the G together for a song. I need both sound sets.
Apex, please help!
Thanks.

you're not off track man. you were doing things pretty right. in my opinion. I instead of using the audio from the rack into the G, I would have just kept it all midi until the final mixdown and then just made one wave file of everything (all together) the way you are doing it, there won't be much room in case you have to edit or change anything. you will basically be sampling (which will take up tons more space than using midi.) so let's make that adjustment first. You can still have the audio coming into the FG, but I wouldn't record the audio into the g. I would just trigger the midi. (you'll still be able to hear it because you will have the input set to stereo input L & R and you will have your mix in button turned on.)
that should at least get you started.
hey PJ. man I got you don't worry. but just too keep down the clutter you don't have to start two threads that have the same topics. (or similar), if you do that where will I be able to post all my questions? LOL. I hope this helps. just hit me up if you need anything else.

Thanks Apex, man, I owe you. So I can still have the output of the Motif rack coming into the G via audio out of the Motif into the L/R inputs of the G? Instead of recording audio though, record to a midi track?
My setup would be:
In studio mode, press Part View, External, and then setup Channel 1 via MSB, LSB? Then Program Change? Then Level to 127 and Pan L, R, or Center?
How do I also mix in some of the G sounds if I want them?
Take a midi cable out of the G into the EX rack in.
Audio out of rack into audio in of G.
Is this all correct?
Thanks.

yea man you got it. the MSB & LSB for the motif rack are 63, 0 (for preset bank 1), then you just increment the 0 by one for each different bank. the multis are 63, 65 (or 68)
if you want to mix in the FG sounds, just leave the external screen and go back to the internal mode.

Got it, now can I ask, how do I record a midi track? I get no sound when I return a midi cable from the Motif into the Midi In on the G if I try to record midi?
I am only able to record audio?
Thanks Apex, my friend.

what do you mean how do you record a midi track? that's the foundation of how the FGs sequencer is built. MIDI cables do not carry audio. just information. You will record this "midi" track in the same way that you would record if you were on the Internal mode of the sequencer. Choose a track, pick a sound (using the program changes, MSB & LSB), and start playing them keys. You are ONLY triggering midi and it is sending information to the rack about which patch to play and what notes. You are hearing the sound from the Rack XS only through the MIX in option (that you hopefully have turned on!!!!) and have the INPUT of your FG set to bring in audio from the L&R channel (stereo)

Ok, I have something wrong. I have the midi cables hooked up out from G to in on rack. Out on rack to in on G. Audio cables out of rack to audio L/R in on G. I hit I have MSB at 63 and LSB at 0. I hit record after I select a sound and the sequencer for midi automatically goes to midi track 49, however there is no sound. I hit audio and the sound is there and the sequencer goes to audio track 1.
What am I missing? I know it has to be something stupid.

Disregard my latest post, it was something stupid! You had just told me to check my Mix Switch. I didn't do it until just now. I pressed it on and bingo, the midi sound appears.
Apex,
Thanks so much for your help, patient endurance, and advice.
I am sure I will have more questions but I am going to do some recording with the EX and G. I really owe you one!
