just wanted to say cheers for posting the solution to that little problem when you figured it out. You've saved me a lot of frustration trying to figure that out with my new juno-g.

Can you, or someone please explain what is mean by:
4. Load the song from the Fantom as normal?
I am a new owner of an used Fantom X 88 (newer version with expansion).
I have loaded the midi files on my compact flash card from my pc, and have saved them in the roland seq/sng folder (im not in front of the kbd, but believe that is correct). I see them on my display when I browse to that folder, but cannot figure out how to load them. They have the .mid extension. I did not use the USB cable to transfer them to the card. Does that really matter?
The manuals are truly missisng the mark for newbies.

Alower - Just to say, here I am 2 years later trying to load up the midi files off the CDs that come with the SRX5 and 8 expansion boards into my Fantom X7. I have nearly gone down the same harrowing route as yourself, having just spent several hours going through the Fantom's manual, trying to find out how to do this. Why is midi-file-loading not in the Fantom manual and even more frustrating, why is it not in the SRX card manual when Roland actual supply midi files on CD with these SRX boards? There is no answer to this!! But your and everyone's posts on midi file loading look likely to be incredibly helpful. Thanks! I'll certainly watch the replies that Cankicker gets as well. All the best.

Cankicker,
To load a MIDI song file go to:
1. Press [SAVE/LOAD].
2. Press [F6 (Load Song)].
When you get to the Song List screen, use the left & right cursor keys to select SMF, to only show MIDI files.
3. Press either [F1 (User)] or [F2 (Card)] to select the load destination, and select the MIDI file you want using the up & down cursor buttons.
4. Press [F8 (Load)]. You will be asked to confirm.
5. Press [F8 (Exec)] to execute.
Job done.
Hope this helps.
Andy
