My first go-to is always the General MIDI CC values for filter and cutoff.

From the MIDI Implementation Chart:

❍■Resonance (Controller number 71)
❍■Cutoff (Controller number 74)

IIRC these are the standard GM values.

The Studio-set route (setting to matching MIDI channel) is the most-logical, simplest way to achieve this. It's also the most-powerful in that you could stack up to 16 instruments.
