Can I replace the G7 MB with a G6 MB?
Will it recognize the longer keybed and show G7 in the systems menu?

If you use Windows beyond 7 and VISTA, this is not gonna work the old way. You need a patched USB driver. I remember that somebody patched a few bytes in the install definition file and then it worked. You have to search the Forum, because I don't remember the link. Must be here in this FG forum tho...

Can't it be repaired? Most problems are rather easy to fix. Capacitors are in most cases the main culprit.

Most likely power regulator failure or some caps are too old and gave up. Hardware from 2000..2015 has very often problems with cheap capacitors (caps). Did you solve the problem?
