Ok, I figured it out. It's a matter of making up a drum kit of just that one ride cymbal on all the notes. It took a while but I did it. As I made the preset I noticed that you could insert some random articulation variations on different notes. Something to try in the future.

On some digital pianos, you can do a split where you have an acoustic bass layered with a single ride cymbal sample on the lower keyboard, and an acoustic piano on the upper keyboard. it sounds like you are describing note stealing when you run out of polyphony. Have you tried using the voice reserve function?
