juno-g and d keys not working

Post by theniceninja »

okay, this sucks: I got a juno-d three years and three months ago (bought the two year warrenty from guitar center and the factory warrenty added one year to that so I had a three year warrenty). about two weeks ago a couple of the keys stopped responding as well, you have to press them really hard to get them to work. just out of reaction i blew real hard on them and they worked a little better for a few minutes, but shortly after went back to the way they were. So it was still playable and after a sweaty jam session on saturday i let it sit till monday. When i go to play it what do I find? To my dismay, practically the whole middle octave of the keyboard does not work at all. I blew and vacuumed and all that with no change whatsoever. So, i pack the bitch up and take it the nearest guitar center. This is when i learned about the warrenty practically just expiring, further pissing me off. Nonetheless, i needed a keyboard for a gig this weekend so I started playing around on them. I sat at the juno-g for the longest amount of time and while I was playing the grand piano patch, the keys start doing the same thing they did on my juno-d! It can't be a setting issue because why would it do it in the middle of my playing it? I showed the "Keyboard Specialist" who seemed astonished, claiming; "I have a Juno-600 (or something) from the 80's and it's keys still work." That's a big help dude. Then he proceeded to advise me to call Roland saying, "I wonder if they know about this problem?" Then it dawned on me, of course they know about this problem. This was the only keyboard in the room with a big red sticker on it offering $100 rebates on juno-g and juno-d! Not to mention the only thing in the whole store i saw with a bright green sign on it saying "When you purchase this keyboard today you get a $45 guitar center gift card!" Needless to say I did not buy another keyboard just yet. I want to stick with Roland because everyone I have talked to says it's their instrument of choice and the keys should not be having this problem. So i brought my juno-POS to work to try and clean it more thouroughly but i really don't think that should be a problem after having it only three years. I'm just wondering if other people have had this problem with a Juno-d or g and if the stage has the same problems. I understand that these are the lower-end synth keyboards but it doesn't seem right that roland would make a shitty keyboard that breaks (right after the warrenty is up no less). I loved the juno-d, the interface is simple and user friendly, very good for preformances and a great sound for the money. I would like to get a Juno-stage but I don't want the same thing to happen. Any Roland G is way out of my price range. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to get or what to do? Is anyone here actually affiliated with Roland? Why is there not a recall rather than a liquidation scam? Thanks for reading if you did, and thanks for your help if you do.

Maybe I don't read well, but you say the new Juno-G on display had the same problem with "Keys dropping out" as your Juno-D did after @3years? oO

Only on that patch? I'm slightly confused exactly what you're experiencing.

Have you contacted Roland Support? That would be my next step. I'd also find the nearest repair shop.

Technically, I think you're wrong about the extended warranty - #1) isn't two year warranty from Guitar Center still only two years from purchase - has nothing to do with Mfg. they just swap it out in store, #2) you should be aware 99% of the time only benefits the salesperson who sold it to you, on any product.

As for some concerted scam by Roland, that makes no absolutely no sense. They regularly have special offers on all of their products. I understand you're frustrated(who wouldn't be) but if you really feel that way, maybe you should just throw it in the trash.

Yes, after playing the juno-g on display for a few minutes the keys started doing what seemed like the same thing where it was harder to get them to sound like normal. They didn't actually drop out but it was the same thing my keyboard did before they stopped working altogether. It seemed to go back to normal after changing patches but it was still there, and I don't understand how that could be dirt under the keys or whatever if it goes back and forth like that.
What they explained to me in the store was that the one year mfg. warrenty would cover me for a year after the two year one from the store expired, so I was just saying what they told me.
everyone I have contacted about repairing it says to clean it. I will contact Roland support and see what they say. thanks for your advice

I have something similar in that a patch shift fixes it but it is across all keys and is a case of volume drop, not a case of not playing at all. The manufacturer will not engage in the kind of troubleshooting anyone in a technical realm should be capable of. ("Hmm, it fixes with a patch change, have you made any changes to the OS lately or added hardware? We had something similar on product y and it turns out to be...."

Instead you are directed to a link that spits a form email back at you and "send it on in" like we are all sitting out here with spare keys. I am going to be forced to take mine to the designated repair site ("Snyder Organ Service in Sauk City, WI"!) but have low expectations. Given that the LA depot will undoubted charge half the value (somebody tell me if they had a different experience please) I can't imagine going that route AND having been given no sense of what turnaround is like.

Instead I will limp it along until I can afford a replacement unless some solution surprises me. The potential for the transpose issue (just recently started) will grow and someday the lcd will go bad make a repair a bad bet. I make these kinds of decisions every day in my IT day job and know when do stop throwing good money after bad.

In my opinion you don't have to think in terms of conspiracy to consider that the manufacturer might be actively walking away from this model. It is, unfortunately, just your run of the mill 20th century business practice. It's nothing unlike what you see in many other complex technical product lines today. Off warranty? Out of luck.

Our dilemma is really that, as far as I can tell, no brand has decided to exceed these pathetic terms to become the gold standard. Tell me if you have discovered otherwise.

Question for NB; you are talking about a juno-G right? Has anyone had any probs with the Juno-Stage? I guess I'll ask that on the stage forum too
