Mastering(SYS)/MFX Switch Changes - sometimes!?

Does anyone know what makes these changes permanent(after rebooting)? I used to have a problem with the Master Switch getting pulled and not realizing it the next time I'm on the board. My answer to that was to set Master on all the time and have the user settings at 0; simple enough. However, now that I'm actually using the master compressor more often I've noticed changes are also saving sometimes and sometimes not; back to square one.

Rather than trying various combinations, I wondered if someone had a decisive answer already. Do they save everytime you save anything? I hardly ever use System Write.

It's silly, I know, but it's annoyed me more than a couple of times.
