Performance tricks?

Does anyone want to share any tips on layering a performance to build a good sound? There was one post on getting a better piano sound, and I built my own piano performance with layers of varying panning, reverb/chorus, compression effects to thicken the sound and have more impact or sound better played live. Anyone have any favorite core sounds they've layered with fx to sound better?
