"New Post" icons not showing in Firefox 0.8

Post by Phait »

Perhaps cause its still in development? I'm thinking of trying Mozilla because Firefox is a bit slower in the GUI than IE... a popup sneaked in last night and installed spyware and I had to reformat and all, so now I'm using Firefox for browsing since it blocks popups....

I'm hoping Mozilla has a faster GUI and that the Bookmarks are organized alphabetically, cause they're not in FF =(

Well, Mozilla and Firefox used to display new posts correctly, but I didn't check the recent releases, maybe they have messed up something with cookies.

Phait, as far as I know, you use OS X, and they have a superb browser out there - Safari. It is based on the KHTML engine that is developed in collaboration (*) with KDE team (they develop the desktop environment for Linux and other Unices). I use the Konqueror browser in my KDE 3.2 and it's really great. It supports all very recent markup, protocol and security standards. Also, Konqueror works much faster than Mozilla/Firefox and even Opera (which was formerly known as faster browser on Earth). Konqueror displays pages 30% faster than Opera and 50% faster than Mozilla/Firefox. Apple announced that Safari works (renders) 40% faster than IE and Opera.

* note: Apple took the open-source KHTML engine, improved it and then gave the code back to KDE guys; this is not an exact "colaboration", but anyway, both Apple and KDE were very happy :-)

Yeah, 98 is cool :-) It's the only win version that you can really use. It's funny how they say every next win works faster when it requires faster hardware and people end up with almost the same system at the end, except for new 3d graphics and cool icons :-P (yes, apps work faster... sometimes).

I have a 733 Mhz celeron box with 386 Megs RAM and 16 Megs TNT2 card. I run Mandrake Linux 10.0, Linux kernel 2.6.3 and KDE 3.2 (all these were released in March 2004).

What makes me wonder is why every next mandrake version, linux kernel version and KDE vesrion all runs faster on the same machine. Also, linux distros appear each 6-7 month and I'm sure I'm up-to-date with all standards and software packages. $5 for a 4CD set of great software isn't too bad, is it?

This is what I call COOL!!! :-)

Definitely, though closest thing I do have to UNIX is OS X.

Yeah, Mac OS X is very similar to most of Linux distros. The things we have in common are:

1. GCC compiler (both systems are compiled from C/C++ source code with this opensource compiler)
2. CUPS printing system (I have it here too)
3. XFree86 (both OS X and Linux use this version of X graphics server to access video hardware as well as keys, mice and other input devices)
4. Abovementioned KHTML and KJS html/javascript engines (they originate from KDE 3.2 desktop in Linux)

I feel like a snob after this post :-)

Artemio, how do I get the unix 10 and can I get it for $5? We have spoken before and you said you would post but, I know you have been busy. I want to leave win98 but I will not go with another win sys. I can't afford a Mac ($4,000) yet. I have to stay pc because of cost. So help me go unix even if it means more than $5. Thank you.

OK pianodick.

The thing is that I use Mandrake Linux 10.0 community edition (installed it only a week ago). It is based on veeeery new things like new OS kernel, faster and more functional KDE desktop etc.

But what is meant by "community edition" is that it is a (possibly) unstable release for new-technology-savvy linux geeks like me. They will soon release an "official edition" (in May as they promised, so it's only about a month to wait). This "official" release will be more stable and bugfixed. Yes, there are several annoying bugs in community edition that I have - you can fix them only by downloading updates from the net (but for me it's very expensive, I'd rather buy the new official release then).

By the time 10.0 official comes out, I can surely give you several lessons about Linux, I can teach you how to install the system, how to use the desktop, apps and how to set up things if they are not set up automatically.

I'll mail you soon :-)
