mc909 sampling problem.. newbie question..

Hi,
Just got the machine tonight. I'm very intuitive with samplers, grooveboxes, etc. I just bought this today, new. However, when I have a mic or line input in the input(mono), nothing comes up.
I have tried the mic, and line, the line L, L.R. Still nothing.
Is it defective? Or is there something else I'm doing wrong? I'm doing exactly as the quick start guide tells on using your own sample for track 16.

Have you pressed the Mix-In button where all the sample buttons are? Do you have the Line-In control knob turned up?

Also, Press the sampling button and choose Line-In and you will see a screen of settings - you can change this to Microphone here (or Line-In mono/stereo) You'll also see a db meter, when you use your microphone does the db meter register?
