footswitch or slave it to midi clock from another sequencer.

Yes, to go further, you need to go to the System screen and in there set the 909 to slave. I did this with a friend's Korg D8 digital recorder and it worked
well enough. The manual has a section on it, if you don't have the manual, download it from Roland's site. (You'll have to register, but it's not a painful process).
