sp-606, p606, and m-audio oxygen 8v2 midi controller

i am having trouble using my oxygen 8v2 midi controller through the sp-606 so i can use the midi controller with in the p606 software. right now when i do connect my midi controller to the sp606 i am able to press keys on the midi controller and hear a pad bank sound from the sp606 which is not what i want. i want to be able to use the midi controller within the p606 software to play keyboard sounds. the manual and the video tuturial on rolandus.com just tells you that it can be done.
