mc-505 upgrading trouble

Post by zsszatmari »

Dear Forum,

I am new to this forum. I must admit I specifically joined because I am in big trouble...
I've just bought a Roland MC-505 secondhand.
I've tried to update it from 1.05 to 1.07. I thought that using the application found at http://www.roland.com/support/article/? ... d=62152971 is a good idea, but to my surprise it tried to send all the midi files in the directory at once, instead of one-by-one. This resulted in a "midi-err chk sum” message.
I've read before that turning the device off when this happens is a very bad idea, so finally I managed to send out the midi files one-by-one. The 'One' checksums were all correct, but the 'Al' checksum were not because of the first bad steps.
The guide (below) does say that "6) When the update is completed, a checksum will be displayed. Verify that the checksum value is correct.", but does not specify what to do actually when it is not correct.
My question is that if the 'One' checksums were correct for all 13 MIDI files, but the 'Al' aren't,am I safe to turn off/on the device now? I think it is, based on my assumption that each midi file contains which part of the rom it wants to overwrite, so the 'Al' does not really matter, but I might be wrong, I am no expert..

Thank You!

Here is the guide I was referring to:
MC-505 System Program Version Up Disk (PNo. 17048669)

1998/07/29 (Wed)

System Version : 1.07
System Build : 118
Sum of CheckSum : 0F25

Directions for Installation.
[Please note that you will need to re-initialize the MC-505.
You should back up any data that you do not want to lose before
beginning the update]

**Warning**
DO NOT TURN OFF THE POWER ON THE MC-505 WHILE UPDATING OR
RE-INITIALIZING. IT COULD DAMAGE THE UNIT.
***********

1) Connect the MIDI OUT of an external sequencer to the MIDI IN
of the MC-505.
2) While holding down TEMPO/MIXER, PTN SET, and PATCH, turn on
the power.
3) Press ENTER.
4) Transmit the first Standard MIDI File from the sequencer
(_000001.mid).
5) Continue transmitting until all 13 files have been played
in order.
6) When the update is completed, a checksum will be displayed.
Verify that the checksum value is correct.
7) Turn the power off.
8) Turn on the power while holding SHIFT, then press ENTER to
initialize the unit and complete the update. Please note that
initialization takes approximately 4 minutes.

I assume you have already swithed off the unit by now :) Just kidding ... I had that problem myself and recovered by resetting the device and starting over again. Funny thing I also stumbled over that "Verify that the checksum value is correct." as it dows not state what to do, when it is NOT correct. However after resetting, trying and receiving a similar error again, I tried with a different MIDI interface and this helped.
