I just wanted to say thanks to you guys for your guidance with fixing my MC-909 “Fatal error. No Program in ROM” error.
I had this issue after trying to update from OS v1.20 to v1.23 via USB. I downloaded the zipped file from Roland and extracted it to my computer. After following the Service Manual instruction to copy the files to my MC-909, I noticed that the OS updated but there were no sounds, patterns, or songs. So, I thought that should just try moving the contents of the “Roland” folder and that blew everything up! After this, I was getting the “Fatal error. No Program in ROM” error.
So, I hit the Internet in search of a fix. I found the following thread here at RCF that laid it all out for me:

I did as you guys suggested and bought a 128MB SM card and reader from eBay for about $50 for both. When I got them, I copied the files over to the SM card and put it in the MC-909 then turned the power on. To my extreme happiness, the machine began reading the card are installing the all the goods. Man, it was great to see that “OK” message when complete. :)
DO NOT TRY TO UPDATE YOUR MC-909 VIA USB METHOD!
Now for my small contribution:
After pulling the memory card and turning the machine back on, I noticed that everything appeared to be loaded except for the Songs. So, I went into Menu/Utility and ran the “Factory Reset” in the top right-hand corner of the menu and after restarting once again, the Songs are now loaded and everything is in perfect condition.
