MC-808, big brother or little brother?

Post by The Box Drone »

Does anyone know whether the MC-808 is a big brother or a little brother to the 909? it looks like a little bit of both to me...

i think overall it's little brother. surely by looking at it it's definately. i think the 909 looks cooler with all the knobs and faders. the only thing i like about the 808 is the 128 note polyphony. other than that i would rather have the 909. the motorized faders are cool but there are far more important things they could have added other than that.

for those who haven't seen it yet check the link.

Looks like a hard disc recorder - on first glance I thought it was a Yamaha AW16g.

I am a huge Groovebox fan, but this 'thing' has nothing in common with a Groovebox. Personally I can't see the advantage of motorized faders on a Groovebox.

The MC808 is a "twin brother" of the 909.

The sound engine is the same the WX engine as the 909 but with 128 voice poliphony
Diferent styles and patches
Moving Faders
Saves to Compact Flash instead of SmartMedia
Sampling and sequencer are the same

Imagine the fader moving to the right position when you call a parameter... ;-)

"fraternal twin" I think

All the knobs and sliders on the MC-909, are now motorized Faders. I think it's pretty ingenius really. As you change from patch to patch, the HUI you now use for cutoff, resonance, delay, pitch, etc.. change to match the patches in the pattern. When you used to grab a knob to adjust Cutoff, or resonance as the pattern plays, if you set cutoff at 14% and the knob is at 80%, the cutoff would jump from 14% to 80%, and you'd start adjusting from the 80%, and not the 14%. Now with the motorized fader, if you had 14%, and you want to bump it up to 35%, that's exactly what you get... it'll sound more like what you had in mind.

It'll take some getting used to I'm sure, but it really is a big improvement.

My only disappointment, is that it doesn't have audio tracks, more parts(32 instead of 16), more midi tracks, or more effects. For some reason, I thought it would have at least one item from that list.

They should have done that on the FX. It would come in handy.
