That's a cool one Mike, thanks for your great work. Too bad you can't download it to view offline though (hint for web site developers ;-)).

theres a free dvd tutorial of mc808 with the sp404 tutorial included too. heigo tani's music video performance with sh-201 is great. watching it makes me want to buy the thing. too bad i already bought a fantom x, which i love, but i cant spend too much money.

there is also free dvd of sh201, juno-g and vp550, includes Hideki Matsutake of Logic System, he used to be in YMO band, in the dvd he is teaching basic synthesis with the sh201. at the end he does a live performance with Hishashi Saito using sh201 and vp550. its great and its free.

does this brilliant new video address any MIDI implementation, specifically the hoops one has to jump through to get the MC-808 to respond to start/stop and/or program change commands?

i am getting so irritated with this box. i have barely touched it because i want it to do one or two simple things that it is supposed to do, and no one can answer my question, not even roland, who said they'd "ask japan" and still haven't gotten back to me. i mean, there are only 3 answers: "it doesn't do that" or "it does do that, here's how" or "it does do that, yours is defective".

how this can be marketed as a live performance device and not have a simple footswitch jack installed is beyond me. even if this was aimed at DJs or people who have it right in front of them, wouldn't R&D stop to think that maybe both hands might be occupied? and why take away a feature that's on most every sequencer/drum machine since the 70s (including roland's own SP-606)?

i have spent so much money and time on this thing when i just want to make music. instead all i want to do is scream.

ok, well...i was an angry young man when i posted that last comment. i have learned since then.

so it turns out for various reasons the MIDIsolutions footswitch controller i was using wasn't receiving programming info correctly. i sorted it out with the inventor, and now IT WORKS!

i also made an amazing discovery - regardless of the descriptions of their function, for this i needed an UNLATCHED footswitch when i've been using a LATCHED. both work, but the 5L would require me to hit it twice each time to do anything, while the 5U toggles on/off even though this is touted as a momentary footswitch for applications such as a sustain pedal.

HOWEVER...here's the catch. for me even having to use all this BS is irritating when roland could have just put a simple footswitch jack in. the one bright spot is that i could also put a MIDI mouse in the chain and change programs up and down with another foot tap.

at least in theory. according to the MIDI implementation chart on the MC-808, sequencer section program changes are accepted. in fact i have the dedicated setting for that all ready: "Rx Prog Change=ON". same results as before: the MIDI mouse will change patches within a pattern, but will not change patterns or (most importantly) songs. all i want to do is have all the songs for a set in order (e.g. songs 1-10) and instead of bending down after each song, all i have to do is tap the footswitch and the next song is ready to go. is this too much to ask?
