someone posted here or on the yahoo group that MC-808 Ver.1.02 software is on the roland website. so it is, and i downloaded it, but it says something about needing a card reader to perform the operation.
is this true? can't you just download the software to the card on the MC-808?
Updating MC-808 software - card reader?
Where is the software?
I looked for the MC-808 update but couldn't find it. Where is it? What does it claim to fix or improve?

Card reader
Found it; thanks! I even updated my MC-808 successfully!
I have no idea what would happen if you downloaded the software to the card on the MC-808. I would not at all be surprised if it would work, and the folks at Roland just didn't think of it.
On the other hand, card readers are cheap, and you might want to buy one anyway. I happened to have a PCMCIA adapter for my laptop -- I think I paid all of $10 for it -- and it worked fine.

Re: Updating MC-808 software - card reader?
Is it possible to update the mc 808 without a external cardreader?
I mean to directly upload the update on the card in the mc 808?
Can anyone answer this question?
Thnx nick

The fix:
[Ver. 1.01 -> Ver. 1.02]
- "Import SMF" and "Save as SMF" have been added as System Mode utility functions.
- You can now select patches while recording a pattern using Realtime Rec/TR-Rec/Step Rec.
- When specifying a note number in various setting screens, you can now hold down [SHIFT] and press [INC][DEC] to change the value in steps of 12 (one octave).
- We fixed the problem that had caused fader operations to affect all rhythm tones even if you selected a rhythm tone as described in the procedure on p. 93-94 of the owner's manual.
- We have improved the stability of operation when playing a pattern that causes faders to continue moving.
-- Items required for updating the MC-808 --------------------------------------------
- The MC-808 itself
- A CompactFlash card having a capacity of from 32 MB to 1 GB, initialized by the MC-808
- A CompactFlash card reader/writer
- A computer that can use the above card reader/writer

@Vinnie
Can you verify the following steps, before i do something wrong ?
1-Connect the mC808 with Pc in USB-storage mode
2-Drop the Bin file in the Roland folder of the Card
3-Get out of the storage mode and power off
4-Power On and the update automatically begins
5-If mc808 say "Completed" get again in USB-storage mode and delete the Binfile from the card.
Are these the steps you took?
Or did i overlook something?

Re: Updating MC-808 software - card reader?
I did follow the steps until i got to step 5 :
It is NOT possible to go in USB Storage mode after the update says
"completed" The only option was Power Off, because al lights stayed
off and no knobs responding.
So i was puzzled how to get the Bin file deleted from the card
without triggering the update again by powering On.
I did the "Vulcan Nerve Trick" , and Powered on without the card
and inserted the card with a powered on MC, wich is not recommended, but hey, it worked and i deleted the binfile from the card. Checked System/Info and it reads version 1.02
