mc808 very erratic

Hi all,

i have an 808 for a while an love it..however every so often it loses itself.
i can be playing a pattern with no long samples or anything complicated and then for the first part of a pattern it slows down stretches all the sound and then sorts itself out and is back in time.
any one else experience this ?
and what causes it?
