Is there a MIDI signal that will cause the MC-808 to change from one pattern to another?

it is not possible a for my knowledge. You could try to define a pattern set and send the appropriate note event for the key.

As far as I can tell, if you're in "pattern call" mode, pressing the note buttons on the MC-808 does not send any MIDI directly -- it just sends "Song position pointer" of 0, which it also does when you change patterns by hand.
Sending MIDI notes to the MC-808 seems to render those notes through the appropriate synth channel, regardless of whether it's in pattern call mode or not.
