confused! are there any 808 and rs7000 combo users?

Post by markxl1 »

hi everyone,
i've never used a roland groovebox before but have had many korg/yamaha grooveboxes over the last 10 years.

i bought the 808 as i was fed up with the sounds from the rs7000.
my aim is to play sequences from the rs7000 and record the midi into the 808.then playback on the 808...... seems simple eh!!

I think the best way for me is to probably have drums/prc on tracks 1-8, bass/synths/fx/vox on tracks 9-16 (numerous note free templates)....then create patterns on the rs7000 and midi record when happy with my patterns. shame it's the other way round on the preset patterns (good soundsets at least)

i'll let you know how it goes.....

Any tips welcome........

Actually I am having great success with this combination of grooveboxes. This is the solution that I found best for my purposes.

a) rs7000 in the master sequencer and the MC808 is the slave.
b) Sysex dump from yamaha rs set to 0(crucial a)
c) midi cable from midi out B on yamaha to mc808 midi in(crucial b)
d) usb mode set to storage(crucial c)

explanation.

If you use the midi out b port on the RS7000, then you are only sending start and stop functions....this gives you the mc808 channels that you can use and program independently of the rs7000...yes you can also send note data from the yamaha to the mc808, but the rs7000 usually has drums on tracks 1-8 and instr. on 9-16...on the mc808 the instruments are usually on 1-8 and the drums on 9-16.

Sysex dump. If you do not set this to 0, the MC808 will fall out of sync with the RS7K and this will drive you crazy...it is crucial to set this to 0.

Usb mode must be set to "storage" otherwise the mc808 turns OFF the midi in port.

If you really want to PROGRAM the MC808 with the rs7000....then you can do this:

midi patchbay and have the rs7000 attached on midi out ports a AND b
and then using the midi thru function select whether you want just start stop info, or Full data being transmitted.

Realtime record into the mc808, then quantize result, etc. and then switch the thru BACK to the midi out B port.

The MC808 has a tedious sequencer...but when you understand how it works it is not so bad. The quantize functions are robust, but not in realtime....but I feel that the two units play quite well together.

also you can set realtime record to receive note....this comes in handy when you if you would like to use the rs7000 superior sequencer to write patterns and then transfer them to a track on the MC808. This is the tits. because it gives you instant access to all the mc808's patches. Combine this with the midi fx and the realtime remix function and you write extremely detailed closely related sequences.
