Post by sandrolover »

Dear expert,
i want my mc-808 playng midi file under the control of Ableton.
For example:
On ableton i have 6 midi channnel, for each chennel i selected external instrument...1-2-3-4-5-6
My Mc808 is set on slave mode (storage mode), all the midi RX option ON.
If i press play on ableton the mc808 recive start, but part 1 and 2 doesn't play. On display part 1 e 2 are emply!! all the other part have their own patch assigned.....
Part 3-4-5-6 sound the patch i chose
If i select manually a patch for part 1-2, when the 808 is playng, channel 1-2 sound the patch i chose, but when i stop it, part 1-2 return empty...
WHY????????

Hi, i would love to help you, but i do not understand your problem.

some thaugts: is mc-808 in slave mode and has some program changes in pattern?

Please try with empty pattern and set all sounds, volumes and pan through ableton.

Bye, Dirk.

i re-try to explain
Ableton is the master.... MC808 is in slave mode.
i would like to play midi tracks charged on ableton sequencer, throu the mc808...
on ableton i have 6 different midi channel.... so i wold like to play this midi sequence whit part 1-2-3-4-5-6 of the mc808.
i chose an empty pattern (for example 800), i select part 1 an i assigned a patch from SBS... and so on for part 2 3 4 5 6.....
I press play on ableton.... the mc808 start to work (fader volume are moving, and the play button is lighting) but part 1 and 2 doesn't play any sound.... part 3 4 5 6 are working, and playng the corrispondent midi channel whit the patch sound i haved assigned.
when the mc808 is playng, if i select part 1 or 2, and i press patch/sample key, on display the patch i have assigned doesn't appear.... NO NUMBER, NO PATCH TIPE... something like that (___) (___) .
I could not understand why the other part are working correctly and just part 1 2 not...
i've tried to change pattern, but it's the same....

Bye Alessandro

Hi Alessandro,

it sounds quite strange as if on channel 1 and 2 some data is sent to mc-808 that confuses the machine.

What would happen if you take the tracks in ableton from 1+2 to e.g. 8+9?

Will it be the same, means: could it be depending on data in the tracks in ableton?

One more thing: You are selecting the patches by hand ? Normally you should insert some kind of bank select / program change in ableton.That would be my guess but i am not deep into ableton.

So please report if the same strange behaviour also shows up if you change the send ports in ableton for channel 1+2 to 8+9.

Then we take next step.

One more thought: is it with every song in ableton or only with a special one?

Could there be channel filters in ableton?
What about the system setting in Mc-808? Any special filters folr channel 1+2 e.g. that disable control change reception so that the program change comes in without a bank select?

Bye, Dirk.

ok, dirk i've done some test... this is the result.
-i chose 3 midi channel on ableton ch1-2-3 (i've done the test with different tipe of midi track to be sure)
-mc808 in slave mode - usb storage, rx prog change ON, rx bank select ON, rx exclusive ON, device ID 17.
- i select an empty pattern (782 and 783)
on part 1 by default there is TRANCE MS
on part 2 by default there is ALPHA TIME
on part 3 by default there is NOISEY
- I set part 1 with SBS BASSIN
- I set part 2 with PLS TRANCEGATE
- i set part 3 with BPD SUPER PAD

I PRESS PLAY ON ABLETON .... BUT:
part 1 sound with TEK CARBON SAW
part 2 sound with HLD PULSE LINE
part 2 sound with BS NEW OLDGBASS

i tried to change pattern with another empty pattern but it's the same...
i tried to use part of a written pattern, but the mc808 didn't use the part selected.
i tried with part 8-9 but nothing....

at the end.... THE MC 808 doesn't play the sound i choose....

Hi,

i played around with ableton and found that you need to set bank, sub bank and program change correctly to select the right patch in mc-808. The following settings to worked with my mc-808 when RX of program change and banl select is enabled:

Bank 82: User patches
Sub Bank: 01 = UsrA
02 = UsrB
03 = UsrC
04 = UsrD
05 = UsrE
06 = UsrF
07 = UsrG
08 = UsrH
33 = CrdA
34 = CrdB
35 = CrdC
36 = CrdD
37 = CrdE
38 = CrdF
39 = CrdG
40 = CrdH

Bank 83: User Rhythm
Sub Bank: 01 = UsrA
02 = UsrB
33 = CrdA
34 = CrdB

Bank 65: User Samples
Sub Bank: 001 = 0001..0128
002 = 0129..0256
...
128 = 1625..1638

Bank 66: Card Samples
Sub Bank: 001 = 0001..0128
002 = 0129..0256
...
128 = 1625..1638

With the program change you can now select any of the 128 patches of that bank.

Bye, Dirk.
