How to connect mc 808 to modern os x (el capitan): manual

Post by Krasowski »

Hello, I'm from Russia and I have some solutions how you can get normally functionality of mc 808 under modern os x like 10.10/10.11
I wrote an big article on the russian here: http://krasowski.livejournal.com/60058.html
You can use google translate.

In more simple form the steps should be:

1. download driver for os x 10.7 and extract .kext and .plugin files (with show packages and unarchive)
2. put .plugin to library/audio/midi drivers
3. download Kext Utility and patch .kext file of our roland
4. move patched .kext from /System/Library/Extensions/ to /Library/Extensions/
5. make permission repair with Kext Utility and Onyx (both)
6. connect mc 808 to usb, switch to midi mode and restart your system
7. after restart check if .kext is loaded (with kextstat command in terminal). then check audio-midi app for correct midi connection of mc 808
---
now you can use mc 808 with your DAWs with simple usb-midi connection. mc 808 should start before os loaded !
---
8. Install Crossover or another Wine app. Make an "windows xp" bootle.
9. Download mc 808 editor for Windows. Install to your bottle from step 8.
10. If everything all right, start editor (don't put attention for errors) and go to setup midi.
11. In some cases in need for faster switch usb on roland to the STORAGE mode and the to the MIDI mode immediately.
12. Now you can try read data from mc 808

I check it with 10.11.4 and 10.11.3 on macbook pro 2014. I didn't see for any problems on another systems.
Please, try this and write about your success.

Thank you.

why not? You should try this! If driver for Fantom X work's OK than install software with method above. I try Roland Juno G with the same method and it does work!

At this moment I use os x 10.11.5 and everything work pretty well with my mc808. Don't forget to use ONYX for permissions repairs after install combo/delta updates of OS X. And once again – hardware should be ON before system start.
This method above based on the 2 big parts:
Part 1. trying for correct working latest (old) roland drivers under latest os x for your specify hardware (for example, Korg Co. use universal midi-driver for all stuff);
Part 2. install windows software with Crossover or other type of WINE apps (mac roland apps are PPC and will not work on modern osx). With Crossover 15.x it works pretty well with some rare interruptions.

On my OS X 10.11.5 it doesn't work... and when I try to load .kext manual on terminal, I see error:

failed to load - (libkern/kext) not loadable (reason unspecified)
