I did a search in the forum, plus looked at the FAQ, and my problem is not presented.
This is proving to be one of the most frustrating machines I've ever owned. Getting Win 10 to recognize the unit in USB Storage mode is a toss of the dice. I can get it to happen once in a while, but I haven't found a consistent method. Half the wav files I create in Ableton are called "Illegal File!" in the unit and can't be loaded. When I sample conventionally, I can save my samples to the card or user memory, but I can't consistently edit them for some reason. When in Patch/Sample mode, if I use the shift+ shortcuts for editing (start point, truncate, etc.) I am told "Not Sample Patch!", whatever that means. After sampling, I can't figure out how to chop my samples and create a Rhythm patch. All in all, I'm sure there are ways to do all of these things, but I've read the paper manual cover-to-cover and it's not clearly stated how the architecture works.
Neither of these errors are listed in the paper manual (page 142; "Error Messages"). Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance!
Why am I getting a "Not Sample Patch!" error with imported/recorded samples?
Re: Why am I getting a "Not Sample Patch!" error with imported/recorded samples?
you have to assign the imported sample to the patch, otherwise it will not be saved

Check if you are in "PATCH/SAMPLE" mode at the top (maybe you're in pattern mode).
I think the MC-808 only supports up to 16 bit 44.1 khz samples. Check what Ableton is exporting.

Re: Why am I getting a "Not Sample Patch!" error with imported/recorded samples?
All imported samples import and play correctly, and are in the proper format. The same error occurs with conventionally-sampled-through-audio samples.
All of the samples in question have been saved to a patch.
This seems to have been the problem. When in Pattern mode, I can sample, save and playback audio samples, and even recall them, but not edit them, as I get the error "not a sample patch!". I have to sample in Patch/Sample, then save, then edit. I still can't make it work consistently with imported samples, and I've kind of given up on using the import function.
Thanks for the help, everyone!

The w2r.exe sample import program is amazing. It will batch name/order your samples for importing.
