DOES MASSIVE arrived!

Post by Artemiy »

Hey guys,

today I authorized my Massive from NI, and I am enjoying it a real lot!

Previously it seemed very CPU-hungry but in real world I was able to use 6 instances of it on a single core of my iMac's 1.83 GHz Core Duo processor (this was in GarageBand which doesn't seem to be optimized for multiple cores). So I assume on a similar setup with hosts like Cubase or Logic you'd be able to use 12 instances at least which is very cool for such a fantastic sound.

Here's a little track made in 30 minutes:

And not bad for a half hour. A friend and I used to make patterns on a mc-909 with a time limit of 10 minutes, to see who could make a better groove faster.....I always won ;-}

Ohh, nice!

General question though. I thought Garageband couldn't use VSTi?

GarageBand can't use VSTi but can use OS X's native Audio Unit plugins, both synths and effects. So right out of the box you get a quite nice host! It can do piano-roll editing, you can drag and drop samples from Finder right into tracks, etc. I think interface-wise it even beats Logic - GarageBand is pure Apple's concept and is so intuitive to use.

Ah Christmas came early eh? I though Mrs. Artemio was going to keep it from you and make you wait....

Have you used mainly single Osc sounds in that track? I can certainly top 40% on my 4400+ dual core PC with some patches - but thats stand alone or in Kore (my door stop).

Yes, I supposed to authorize it on 1st Jan but... well... you know ;-) But to be fair, I will not read the manual until that date.

Anyway, no, these were not single-osc patches. Most used 3 oscs or 2 oscs with mod osc, and each two effects. So as I said in real world Massive is great. In a multi-threaded host you should be able to have a really crazy setup!

Artemio

I was going to make up a little tune using your patch - but when i tried to use it in SONAR and P5 i got all sorts of wierd results. It turns out this happens with any tempo synced Massive patch on my system (see my post on the Massive Technical Issues forum (from Old Trancer)) have you got any ideas on this?

Well seems like some hosts do not send the clock data when the sequencer is not running, but Massive needs that. Try going to the Globals tab in Massive and switch external sync off, then set Massive's internal tempo to the host tempo.
