Anti Virus - Microsoft Security Essentials
Anti Virus - Microsoft Security Essentials
I almost decided on an expensive Mac again!!!!
But, I found Microsoft Security Essentials for Free!
It installs fast and does not slow down my computer!
My anti-virus renewal is this month...
I was doing fine with Bit Defender 2010, but now 2011 has caused installation errors and I can't even go back to 2010 even with 5 uninstalls, etc. !!!!!
I tried Norton 360...SLOW computer....Word docs would freeze and barely open if more than one folder deep in my documents.
I almost went Mac on you Art!
But, maybe Microsoft is getting responsible about this virus issue. Their program seems to work great and it is free!!!
Some of the Anti-Virus companies are out to Sue them now of course! LOL

Re: Anti Virus - Microsoft Security Essentials
madAhorn, that's only 1% of the difference really. 99% is all about the fact that Windows was simply coded, and Mac OS X was designed and thought through in every detail. You won't understand it in screenshots or 10-minute in-store tests. But in a few weeks you'll be asking yourself how could you live with such a poor system for some many years.

Re: Anti Virus - Microsoft Security Essentials
I was just thinking what else makes a Mac?
Can I buy the OS and just use it on my Computer?
OK...I see it is possible....
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-install-mac-os-x-on...
OH!!!
At the end of the article is the Legal Disclaimer stutt....
Maybe I shouldn't bother making my own?
another question about Windows brewing in my head coming up...

You'll never know until you give it a go
madAhorn:
Mac is hardware + software, developed to work together by one company. Mac OS X doesn't have to have thousands of drivers and other stuff to make it work on any custom configurations, and is thus optimized for the Mac machine it runs on. This gives more efficiency and stability.
For example, my 1.83 GHz dual-core Mac with OS X runs much faster than my father's 2.8 GHz dual-core PC with Windows 7.
I am not a Mac-o-holic, I am a rationalist. Life is short and I do not want to waste a minute with the maintenance of my computer. For me my Mac has been maintenance-free for almost 5 years.
I have been through Windows - and also thought that Macs are overhyped, expensive and fashion-oriented computers. I think many people think like this. But I can confirm that this is rubbish.

Save your time, money, nerves and your projects. Buy a Mac.
In many cases, the entry level iMac or MBP can be enough.

Re: Anti Virus - Microsoft Security Essentials
The anti-virus is dead, haha.
I haven't used one for 7 years and have had one virus which I was aware of and I killed it in 20 minutes.
Your ISP is filtering to such an extent that it would be diffficult these days to get a virus. Most programs now call 'tracking cookies' virus because they want you to think they are doing something for their money.
See the light - it's all bullshit.

Interesting.
Re: Anti Virus - Microsoft Security Essentials
MeNotU, it's a matter of luck, unfortunately. I have a few friends which lost their data after 2-3 months of using their fresh new PC machines. I also do have friends which never had issues even though they had no anti-virus software.
Re: Anti Virus - Microsoft Security Essentials
I've spent 15 years being paid to deal with virus on peoples PC's, and you soon find out where they come from and how to deal with it.
Using Outlook Express accounted for 75% of them, and having the preview pane 'on' was the reason for most of those.
20% caused by porn and or Napster etc, the stealing of software has its perils.
5% the odd 'stinger' virus etc which infected most people (except maybe macs lol).
Answer = use Hotmail, dont do porn (on your music PC anyways), don't think you can simply rip $1k of software in 20 minutes.
Deeper answer = partition your hard drive into 3 parts, make C drive realy small, only have the basic OS on there. Make D a good size and load your programs (and set up disks, and downloaded programs - save to disk) for instant future retreival. Make E your data drive - make it huge.
98% of virus attack C - no problem, reinstall OS, your programs and data are safe.
Deeper deeper? Have 2 hard drives, a small and a huge, do likewise as above, 99% of virus will not see the other drive.
Another advantage? Your software licenses that run for only 1 year, you reformat your C every year for maintenence, keeps your PC in top shape and your software license is valid for another year I saved 7 years of license fees doing this.
Ultimate answer - also have back up storage for your data drive, away from the PC. I network 2 together and transfer data from each other, so they mirror each other, home virus is not designed to spread your network, and windows sharing security can disallow write to networked pc's.
This strategy saved me lots of hassle and lots of money
And best of all, no anti-virus dragging my system down.

Excellent advise!
I do use 3 Hard Drives, but not in the way you specify.
I will give this a try! Awesome!

Re: Anti Virus - Microsoft Security Essentials
Yes, replace IE and Outlook as soon as you can, this has always been my advice as well. Use Safari, Firefox or Opera, plus Thunderbird for e-mail, or even better, your e-mail provider's web interface.
But guys - don't hate the Macs because we love them so much. That's the only thing I am asking for.
