using laptop pc as storage and burner for vs1680

Hi, i'm new to the furom thing.
i've owned a very under utilized vs1680 for years. the cdr rw i bought with it has died and i'm in a quandry as to what to do.
is there a way i can use my laptop? i do own a plextor that i could use if i had a newer software version. i'm 2.0, will i lose my unbackupable data if i upgrade?
