recording/mastering help

I have the boss-br-900, and love it. I've done some decent recordings with it, however I'm missing something with mastering. I'm new at recording and basicly teaching myself. I've heard some stuff done by others using the 600, 900, and 1200. How does one make their stuff sound so good without using another program such as pro tools, cakewalk, etc... Along with the 900 I use an AKG Perception 200 Condenser Mic and Monster Cables. I sometimes use Audacity for cleaning up and adding effects to vocals.
