BOSS Micro BR vs. Zoom H4

Post by stratt28 »

Can anyone give me any first-hand experience feedback.? I currently own a Micro BR and record my acoustic and vocals thru the onboard mic which sounds pretty decent I think. Does the Zoom H4 produce a better quality recording? Is it noticeable????? And lastly, does a stereo mic make that much of a difference plugged into the Micro BR? Would the stereo mic on the H4 sound that much better than the onboard mic on the Micro BR?

Thanks very much and enjoy the day!

Well, Zoom H4 is a dedicated recorder whereas the Micro BR is a little multitrack studio with lots of effects - so these are two different pieces of gear. I am not sure about the BR's mics, but the ones in my Edirol R-1 are nearly perfect, I just love them.

Zoom H4 is a field recorder so you will get a more spatial recording with it and a bit better quality. Comparing a stereo electret microphone plugged on Micro BR to the built in Zoom H4 microphones recording an acoustic guitar, Zoom wins. But I've found that you can create great acoustic recordings with Micro BR.

See this sites for recording samples of stereo microphones plugged on Micro BR:

The last one is an awesome recording using Sony ECM-DS70P (partial damaged).

Its easier to record acoustic guitars with stereo microphones and may sound better than recording mono.

Zoom H4 is very cool, check this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD9ZlM91XSE

You could also take a look at Zoom H2.

Boss micro BR Vs Zoom H4

I've got a zoom H2 but can't decide which to get, the h4 or the BR.
I've heard the H4 might be superior for in the field stuff and the BR is more capable as a mini studio.
In some of the forums I've noticed that the Boss can be very complicated or unclear or user unfriendly with its instruction manual for us non tech types, so I'm wary about being seduced despite all the things it can do that the H4 can't.
My instinct is that the H4 would be simpler to use evan though its more expensive and dosen't have drums or much effects.
Are both these machines able to punch in ie..edit at any point in a track where you've made an error?

Much obliged in anticipation of someones advice

You might want to also look at the TASCAM DP-004. It's not as versatile and feature-packed as the Micro BR, but it's much easier to operate and a bit less expensive. See my comparison of the pros and cons here:
