Roland M16E stereo?

I bought myself a roland M16E.
A wonderful little mixer.
But, i cant seem to get the stereo pan effect!
Is the headphone only mono?
I can use two mono cables left and right, into two channels or i can use a stereo jack "y" cable (2xmono to one stereo), but either way, i just cant get the stereoeffect!
If i pan, it sounds in left or right, and is silend in the other direction.
Anny suggestions?
