Save A Prayer "horn" patch

Post by jfled »

Anyone know how to create that horn patch that Nick Rhodes uses at the beginning of Save a Prayer? Also, can you split the keyboard with an arpegio on the left and a patch on the right?

Not sure how to program that horn sound, but to split the arpeggiator to either the Lower or Upper part, you need to connect the synth to the computer editor.

Once connected, go the Arpeggio section at the bottom right corner, select Detail, then another menu will pop up. There will be section that says Split Arpeggio and you can set it to Both, Lower or Upper.

For both of those sounds, there are some presets on the 201 that are somewhat in the ballpark (can't recall the numbers, sorry). Find them, then twiddle with the amp envelope to get the attack right, and the filter cutoff/freq and filter envelope to zero in on the timbre. I seem to remember the lead melody sound having portamento, so you'll probably need to tweak the portamento speed to get that little trill-like phrase that Rhodes does exactly right...
