Rush - New World Man - synth bass

Post by rbarkhouse »

Hey all, any SH201 programming wizards out there who could help me out trying to recreate the synth bass sound in Rush's "New World Man"? Everything I come up with sounds too "dead" sounding...

The sound can be heard right at the beginning of the song:

disclaimer: not a wizard, and don't even have a SH-201, but I haven't heard that song in a while so.

It sounds like you need some movement.

The synth bass is pretty basic sound; I read this suggestion a lot - use two saws and detune one. Ok, fast attack, short delay, no sustain, some release could add depth.

From there, you could set an arpeggio playing over the bassline. Two 16 note patterns, on the 2nd the last two notes step up an octave.

Now, back to that movement thing... are you using your LFO to modulate the filter(s)? Speaking of which, a mid cutoff LPF with some resonance will get you in the ballpark.

He maybe using an effect in there too, try some chorus at a slow rate to widen things up.

Hope that is a start. Good luck and happy listening.
