End of the of SH-201?

Post by socprof »

It looks like the successor to the SH-201 is arriving. This probably means that Roland will stop production soon.

It looks like an incremental improvement over the SH-201, although I think they dropped the feebback osc. I don't plan on getting one. If I'm going to spring for a new synth, it would have to be one that sounds significantly different from what I have already.

Tony, the SH-01 sounds very different from the SH-201, trust me. I am not going to talk you into it of course, but I would recommend you to listen to it personally so hear what I mean.

Thanks for the tip. I assumed it had the same basic sound as the SH-201. I will have to get over to the Guitar Center and give one a listen.

Trust me, I have played with both 201 and 01 and they sound very different. SH-201 has a more cold, rough character, while the 01 has a more warm and smooth character. With 3 full tones, 64-voice polyphony, and 5 chainable effects, it can also sound much bigger than the 201.

You can also check out some audio examples I posted here:

P.S. Forgot to add, you can pan each tone individually.

You're in the states, we could carpool!

Much bigger indeed, and I'm rather interested to see what kind of pads you could get out of the 01; something I wouldn't really consider the 201 for.

I will probably splash out on an 01 too. From what I have seen of it so far it indeed does sound a lot warmer than the 201 and seems like it could actually compliment it quiet well.

To answer the question of the topic, I have posted a vid in the SH-01 forum which is saying that the SH-01 is the successor of the SH-201.

As I think it is a Roland representative telling it so it must be right.

Cheers

I would hang on to your SH-201 for a bit. I have the SH-01 now and both are fun to work with. Some of the functionality is different, although I prefer the sounds of the Sh-01 along with the effects. Still the Sh-201 is very useful.

Too late. I already threw my SH-201 out a window. ;-)

If I understand the GAIA correctly, it is impossible to stack 4 oscillators together like you can on the SH-201. Is this correct?

"64-voice polyphony" a joke or what?

it is simply not as good as the sh-201.

they dropped dual mode with the gaia!!!!!!!!!

who wants 64 note polyphony with the same voice?

the sh-201 is fatter than the gaia and it can stack 4 osc at same time for more complex interesting sounds. the gaia only 3.

the gaia will go down in roland's history as a bit of a cock up.
