Sound is completely distorted

Post by antnee »

HI,
When I play even the demo songs on the sonic cell it sounds like an explosion every time a sound is played making it completely unusable. I have done a factory reset but no change. Can anyone help? Thanks.

and this is brand new?
purchased from a store?

might be worth taking the unit back, and your headphones to check another unit,

silly question time..
you have reduced the volume using the control next to the headphone socket?

It might be possible that the headphones impedance is lower than the Sonic Cell's headphone amp can handle.

Perhaps another Sonic Cell owners can check theirs using the demo tunes?

Mine is perfect. No distorted sound in any interface.

Could be related to faulty cables/connections...

Could you record that distorted sound and post it here ? maybe someone can help to identify what would be causing the issue.

reduce the volume on the headphones, and on the sonic cell...

I am 99% sure that that is causing it....

Here's what it sounds like. I just recorded it using the headphone out to the mic in on the pc. I tried it through a speaker a few mins ago and it was working fine then just went back to this. This is a recording of the first few seconds of the welcome back demo that was playing fine earlier.

PS. Turn down your omputer volume before listening, the sound is annoying and loud.

Make & model of headphones if you please..

Are you also saying that you've tried the SonicCell with a speaker, what speaker?
You also say it sounded fine.
Well, surely that means the SonicCell is functioning correctly?

The wav file you supplied..
Yes that's distorted, but if you've used a microphone input with something that kicks out an amplified signal I wouldn't expect it ant other way.

Sennheiser cx-300 headphones. When I said it worked fine it was for a couple of seconds then went back to sounding like the sample i posted. As for the sample, i had the the master volume of the sonic at 2 and the input recording gain reduced so as to record exactly what i hear when it is played. Could it be because it hasn't been use much? Would leaving it plugged in and switched on for a hile make a difference

Thank you for the info.
Those headphones do have a low impedance figure of 16 ohms.
It's possibly (but by no sense certain) that it may be overloading the SonicCell's headphone output.

There are no spec details on the headphone out.
Do you have anyway of using the main audio outputs (jacks), all the demos I've heard of the SonicCell (on line) all sound fine.

It's possible you have a dud one.
That's why I suggested taking it back, and also taking along your headphones, just in case it's these which are causing the problem.
So far no other SC user has reported similar issues

I'm at a loss to explain it..

Thanks for the help. I have the SC over a year but it has been in the box for nine months of that. It worked fine until i stored it but since i've taken it back out it has sounded like this. I've tried the main outputs too and same situation.
I actually took it out to sell it but looks like i won't be doing that now....
I wonder would switch cleaner spray help or is that a real bad idea. I was surprised the other day when it worked for a few seconds then went back to sounding like the sample

I wouldn't go spraying solvents in places you don't really have to.

That clip sounds like 99.9% pink noise. I'd find a local service center and have it looked at. It could be a few things and they'll at least be able to rule out the obvious(cabling, resistance, etc.) very easily. You may get out of it cheap and still be able to sell it comfortably.

Having been stored makes it all the more mysterious. Condensation? Rats? Ghosts?
