Question for computer users

Post by canefire »

Hi, I am finally incorporating a computer into my studio. So far I have been able to live without one but I bought a yamaha AN200 and to really get into the editing of it one needs a computer.
So my question is...can I use the sonic cell simply as a midi interface? Literally, can I run the editor for my yamaha synth on the computer and then plug the yamaha midi in/out cables into the Sonic Cell and then plug the usb cable between the Sonic Cell and the computer and be able to work off the computer editor?
Or does the Sonic Cell only work with the roland software that it came with?

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian,
welcome to the wild world of music computers.
The SC can be used as a MIDI interface.
Press the Menu button
Go to System menu
Go to the USB Midi Thru and turn it on.

With Midi Thru off a keyboard plugged into the Midi will play the SC and not get to the computer.
With Midi Thru on it acts like an Midi interface.
Midi Out always merges the output from the SC (sysex messages etc) and what the computer sends the SC no matter what the state of the Midi Thru.

With your AN200 editor, the Midi information should be in sysex (i think) with a Yamaha identifier so it won't interfere with the SC internal patches etc as the SC will ignore Yamaha sysex.
So you are good to go.
