Wavy sound

I have my Akai EWI5000 connected to my Roland Sonic Cell via MIDI cable. When I play any of the sounds, I get a wave effect. All of the patches sound wavy. Can anybody explain to me how to resolve this issue?

A "wavey" sound?
Vibrato or tremolo?

If the EWI is putting out CC1 (Modulation) Midi values (either through the breath or bite) this could be causing it.

To fix it select a different CC type - CC2 (Breath) for the breath on the EWI.

I don't know much about sound effects, but I believe it is vibrato. I tried adjusting my "breath" on my EWI, but that didn't fix the problem. I still have the problem. The wavy sound on all of my sound effects coming from my Roland Sonic Cell is still their...........any other suggestions?

Start the SonicCell (SC) and select a problem patch.
Start the SC editor on your computer (it should be on PATCH) and select COMMON + MASTERING.
On the drop down box on the right called SYSTEM CTRL SRC 1, it is most likely CC01:MODULATION, select 00:OFF instead.

Play the EWI. Does that fix the problem ?
If it does, you should change the the breath settings on the EWI (I only have a EWI4000 so can't help you there)

Another way to check would be if you have a PC.
Get a Program called MidiOx, install and run it.
Go to Options / Midi devices and select the Midi Input device that connects to your EWI to your PC (perhaps you use the SonicCell as a Midi Input device?)
Make sure the Midi Input window is visible (View / Input Monitor) in MidiOx.

Play the EWI and the Midi coming out of the EWI should be displayed.

When you blow there is a lot of Midi data pouring out of the EWI and you need to know the Data 1 (Title on the top of the Input Monitor window) value.

As I said before this could be CC:Modulation (as displayed in the Event column).

If it is, you either need to change this to CC:Breath controller which is CC2 on the EWI, or set up a data map in MidiOx.

Thank you "rcraven" for your concern in helping me with my issue of the "wavy" sound in my patches.Unfortunately, I still have the issue. At the time, I don't have my SC Editor installed on my laptop.
Im now trying to figure out how to install the SC Editor so that I can attempt one of your suggestions. For some reason, my laptop doesn't prompt me to install SC Editor when I insert the disc. Until I can install the software, Im not able to move forward. Any suggestions why my laptop isn't prompting me to install the software?

I don't think there is an Autoinstall on the CD .

Just pop the CD in and open it and find Setup.
Double click on the Setup icon and follow the instructions.

Thanks rcraven on how to install Soniccell software. It worked! However I still have modulation (wavy) issue.I went into the parameters, and found the CC:modulation button and changed it to zero. But I still have the same problem. I think I may have a configuration problem. Because Im not getting any type of signals from computer to sonic cell. Do you know what type of cables and configuration I should have from my computer to sonic cell? At the present time I have a usb cable connected from my computer going into the sonic cell port that says "computer". I think I am close to resolving this issue. Help!

As long as you have installed the USB drivers for the SC you should be able to select 1:Roland SonicCell in the SonicCell Input and Output when you go to the Midi Setup in the editor (menu option Setup / Setup Midi Devices...)

Hey rcraven, I was able to successfully install the USB drivers for the SC. And I was able to select "Roland Sonic Cell for the Input and Output. Unfortunately I still have that "wavy" sound. I noticed in the Sonic cell Editor that their is all type of parameters and functions that I can edit. I was able to set the CC:Modulation to "0". I still have the "wavy" sound. Any other ideas or suggestions that might eliminate the issue? I know that it has to be something simple that I need to find and adjust. The problem is, I just don't know what it is. Do you have an EWI5000 connected to a Roland SC? If so, have you ever encountered this type of problem. Once again, I thank you for trying to help me resolve this issue!

Hi
what sort of computer do you have?

If it is a PC then download MidiOx http://www.midiox.com/moxdown.htm

Install it. Run it and go to the menu Options / Midi Devices... and select the SC Midi for both input and output.

Select the Menu items...
View / Input Monitor
View /Port Routings

On the SC select Menu
Scroll to and select System.
Scroll down to USB Midi-Thru and turn it on.

Now when you play your EWI you will see the MIDI data displayed on your computer.

You probably won't hear anything coming out of the SC as the Midi from your EWI is going through the SC midi and by passing the sound generator.
To make it sound, left click drag the SC Input icon on the left side of the Midi Port Routing window in MidiOx to the SC Output on the right side.

Normally this would cause the MIDI data to feed back and form an infinite loop. This is why Roland put this Midi-Thru mode in to prevent a loop.

In the MidiOx Input Monitor window note what Midi messages you get (look at the 'EVENT' column).
You should see NOTE ON and NOTE OFF and possibly CC: Modulation or CC: Breath or something else.

Write back to let me know what messages other than NOTE ON and NOTE OFF you see.
Don't forget to go to USB Midi-Thru on the SC and turn it off if you want to play the SC without a computer connected.

Hello rcraven. I was able to install MIDIOX. And I was able to get to the "Monitor-Input also.
In the Monitor-Input window I saw cc: Breath, Control Change, Pitch Bend, System Exclusive and Portamento Time several times. Also I didn't forget to turn off USB Midi-Thru.
