Changed patch tone structure over JV/XP synths

Post by vhalborg »

Hi,

Does anyone know why Roland changed the patch tone structure from the JV/XP synths (which allows for up to 4 tones (with one wave each) in a patch) to the structure found in XV, Fantoms, SonicCell where one can combine 2 waves (one left, one R) into each tone, thereby including up to 8 waves in a patch.

What is the benefit of this new structure over the old one?

Regards,

For example... a sampled piano benefits from having more velocity layers in it (because it is not just louder and softer depending on how hard you hit the keys, other aspects of the sound change as well). With four total waves, you could have four velocity layers in a piano only if you're okay with a mono piano sound. If you wanted a stereo piano sound, you'd only be able to have two velocity layers (left and right for soft strike, left and right for hard strike). With the change you described, you could have four velocity layers even in stereo.
