RD 800 Midi Input Channel

Post by jelke1 »

Hello, I´m very much interested in a RD 800 and I have testd today one in Cologne/Germany.
Now I´ve one question, I think that Roland RD 700 NX User could have an answer too.

I want to play one of the 4 parts of RD 800 with an external keyboard via midi (Motif XF). Is there a possibility to set an individual midi RECEIVE channel on the RD 800? Or has Roland given the RD 800 a fixed assignment on receive channels?
I have found nothing in the parameters (only TX).
Regards, Jochen

On the 700NX, it seems the input channels are fixed to 1-4 for the four main parts.

Mooks is right. It is set out on p.42 of the RD800 manual under the heading "Selecting the Parts That Will Produce Sound (Part Switch 1–16)". On the RD700nx you had the option of having 16 part + the 4 parts that were being played by RD or just 16 parts with input channels 1 - 4 playing the Upper and Lower layers as it works on RD800. That option appears to have been removed on the RD800 though I wonder if anyone will miss it.

I have been able to assign internal tones to all 16 channels of the RD-800 from Cubasis, but the tones for channels 5-16 have to be assigned using MSB/LSB/PC in the software, as they can't be set from the keyboard.
Is that different to the RD-700NX

I was referring to something a little different. On the RD700nx you had the option of having 16 parts accessed remotely through software or another controller + the 4 parts that were being played locally on RD for a total of 20 parts. On the RD800 I think that the first 4 parts played remotely will be the same as the 4 local layers given us a maximum of 16 layers.

Yes, I misunderstood what you were confirming.
The RD-800 is limited to 16 parts (enough for me though), with tones 1-4 being assigned either locally, or from the software.

I agree that it is probably more than enough for anyone given the polyphony on the RD, bgiles.

I've just bought an RD800 second hand. I want to do exactlty what is described in this topic; play a Rhodes sound on the RD800 and a organ sound from the RD800 on a via a MIDI cable connected external MIDI keyboard (MX61 Yamaha) (not USB). Reading the infoarmation shared in this topic I am still wondering: Is this really still not possible ? For live gigs it would be very nice to have this option and it looks to me that this should be supported. If someone can help me with this issue it would be great!

Hi Markus
So long as your external keyboard (or computer software) can transmit MSB/LSB/PC over MIDI, then you should be able to assign RD800 internal tones to MIDI channels 5-16, which will then be output from the RD800 line outs.
I haven't found a way to set tones for anything other than channels 1-4 using the RD800 controls.
