RD-800 price drop

The RD-800 price just dropped to $2000 - $2200 depending on the site, and Roland is offering an additional $200 rebate. Is this indicative of a new model coming out, or just a really great deal to hop on? I really like the 800, but if a new model is getting ready to be announced, I'd be curious to hear the new features before committing to this one. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this?

That's a pretty good indication of a new version coming for NAMM in January. Not a guarantee, but a solid hint. Rebates and price drops in the fall are fairly common when a replacement in imminent. The RD800 was released at NAMM 2014, so decide if three years is an expected product life cycle for this board. Unless they stick an Integra 7 into an RD, I'm not sure if there's any other reason I'd trade in my RD800.

Thanks for the thoughts on it! I currently have an RD-300 GX. In your opinion, would you say that upgrading to the discounted RD-800 now would be the better choice since the 800 seems like a great option, or wait and see what January brings? With the $2000 price tag and a $200 rebate on top, that seems like a really good deal. It looks like a lot of people really love the RD-800, though a few are disappointed they missed out on the 700 NX versions.

That's a pretty incredible price, especially if you get a few more points knocked off by your dealer. If the RD-800 currently does everything you need it to do, it's a great stage piano - the best in its class currently available IMHO!! I absolutely love the keybed. It feels amazing. I sold my first RD-800 to get a Kronos 8 to have more capabilities, but after six months I went back to the RD-800 this summer and traded in the Kronos 8 for a 6. The RD-800 just feels that much better than anything else when you play it.

As for waiting until January... that is always a temptation when it's this close. A buddy once told me "If you play music gear than you'll always chase the latest thing, and spend a lot of money doing it... but if you play music, then you'll be more focused on connecting with the right tool of your trade no matter how new or old it is, and you'll make a lot of music doing it."

My two cents... YMMV...

That's a good point, it is easy to always try to keep chasing the next best thing. Thanks for the sharing the two cents!

The RD800 is a fine instrument. A great all rounder with amazing key action.

Personally I would pass on the next model. There is no point upgrading every time a new model comes out. Its much better to get one at a sensible price and spend 3-4 years getting to know it.

Its about making music - rather than instrument playing and having GAS all the time.
