Re: fantom G !!! - finally
Okay, here is the updated...
Fantom G Questionnaire, NAMM 2008 :
MARKETING
- Is Fan-G replacing or complementing the Fan-X? REPLACING
- Prices?
- Availabity US / Europe / Germany?
- Will there be a rack-version?
- Will there be a 37 key version?
PADS
- Can the 16 buttons still be used as pads like in the current X model? YES
- Are they trigger BUTTONS now? If so, do they have a higher level of functionality than the current pads on the X? What can be assigned to them?
SEQUENCING / RECORDING / EDITING
- What else can be recorded to the sequencer (patch edits, for instance)? Can it record all MIDI information?
- How does it handle 128 MIDI tracks? Are there seperate tracks for keys/pads/external or are they freely assignable?
- Hard drive inside or do you record on to the card slot media? NO HARD DRIVE, USB FLASH STORAGE
- In what ways can the audio tracks be automated...
- Anything going on with RPS?
- Does it have piano roll/graphic edit as well as list edit?
ARPS
- How many pre-programmed arps are there? (e.g. compared to Motif's 6600 and Korg's Karma engine) 128 (same as Fan-X)
- How many user-programmable arp slots are there?
- How many simulaltenous arps are available?
- Can the arp setups be switched in relatime? (ala Motif XS or Korg Karma?)
SOUNDS / ARX / EFFECTS
- Meaning of "ARX lets you add sources of synthesizer”?
- Are the ARX-slots SRX-compatible? NO
- Any existing SRX-sounds onboard Fan-G?
- Quantity of waveforms: 2153 (Fan-X: 1480)
- Quantity of patches: 1500+256 (Fan-X: 1152+256)
VARIOUS
- File system: changes / improvements compared to Fan-X?
- Display: Resolution? Angle adjustable? 800x480, NOT ADJUSTABLE (like Fan-X)
- In/Out: Layout? How many MIDI outs?
- USB 2?
- USB: Is it possible to stream both midi and audio via USB? YES: USB Computer Connector (supports file transfer or mass storage class, and Audio/MIDI)
- Usable as a sound card as well?
- Sampling still included? Skip back sampling still there? YES
- Storage media formats? Maximum size? NO HARD DRIVE, USB FLASH STORAGE
- Synthesis: what forms of alternative synthesis (other than ROM and sampling) are available e.g. VA? FM? etc.
...to be continued...

Re: fantom G !!! - finally
Here's my questions:
1) Do any of the onboard ROM samples differ from what is available on the Fantom-X along with the appropriate complement of SRX boards? i.e. is there anything new that one couldn't achieve with a Fantom-X and the appropriate SRX expansion board?
2) Will there be any way to achieve virtual analog via the ARX expansion? What other synthesis technologies are possible via ARX?

Re: fantom G !!! - finally
...so for me it looks clearly as the replacement for Fan-X since it is (only) a evolution of X instead of a possible revolution.
Therefore I expect the price to be slightly higher than before, but not too much so that competition is going to be very hard for YAMA + KORG.
A little disappointment is: polyphony (still only 128)
Great are:
- Each patch has a own effect, so no accustic difference between the two playing modes anymore!
- more sounds: +700
- USB Flash storage (should be faster than X)
- More inputs
Major questions remain:
HOW DOES THIS BEAUTY SOUND?
HOW MANY OF THE SRX SOUNDS ARE ONBOARD?
USB 2 or still USB 1?
I doubt whether they have re-written / de-bugged the interface...

Hey STRUT, BUT - thanks for your comments. And as I see it you were officially the first to post word about roland.com turning on the Fantom-G pages. However a fellow forum member Vee-CeeOh has created a comments and opinions thread which we're all hoping everyone will agree to use so as to avoid confusion. Hope you'll join us there!
Re: fantom G !!! - finally
I love already this baby...
Re: fantom G !!! - finally
BTW. is a revolution still possible? I mean because even current Fantom-X is prettu good soundwise. Well... I have Juno-G and I doesn't complain....so for me it looks clearly as the replacement for Fan-X since it is (only) a evolution of X instead of a possible revolution.
Except for arps Fantom-G is clearly superior to XS and M3 in almost every way. Therefore I expect the price to be slightly higher than before, but not too much so that competition is going to be very hard for YAMA + KORG.
Indeed. I'd expect a bit more or a combo with 128 "S+S" plust something like 32 "VA/FM" (whatever). Perhaps those voices are epanded with more filters and such?A little disappointment is: polyphony (still only 128)
Can we say finally?Great are:
- Each patch has a own effect, so no accustic difference between the two playing modes anymore!
It should have file based patch system so it could take any number of patches.- more sounds: +700
Hopefully...- USB Flash storage (should be faster than X)

well, I don't think so that G will beat the XS in terms of sounds, but other features for sure since many already were better in fantom X.
