Question

Post by Jonathan »

I'm used to sequencing on the computer and this is my first keyboard with one built in. I can't find where to assign patches to specific parts or channels, so when I lay down a drum track on#1, change the patch, go to track #2, record, and the drums turn into piano. You know, typical midi problems.

That happens because you are in the "PATCH" mode - in this mode you have only two sounds available.

For recording multi-channel songs, you must enter the "PERFORMANCE" mode.

Then you will be able to have 16 separate patches - say, channel 1- piano, 2 - drums, 3 - bass etc.

Good luck!

But in Performance mode you have to assign what region of the key bed for that patch. Does this mean I have to make 16 parts to the keyboard or the sounds of the patches will combine together.

PERFORMANCE mode allows you to use patches in usual "SINGLE" mode - all 16 separately. But also you can split or/and layer them with keyzones ("LAYER") - you don't need this as I understand.

If I had a Fantom-S, I'd tell you what to do exactly.

But since I don't - just look for a keyboard mode (maybe "Key Mode") section where you can switch from "LAYER" to "SINGLE".

Artemio. I can't find where to switch it to single mode for sequencing. There's a split/layer button and a patch/rhythm button, and I've checked everywere. I don't have the manual yet. ( long story)

Well, I can't say where too look for it exactly, as I don't have a Fantom-S yet.

But you can look somewhere like in PERFORMANCE->GENERAL. At least it's there in my XP-80.

OK, I figured it out. In Mixer mode there are small KRB opions at the bottom of each track. You must turn them all off or the performance will be layerd. You also have to extend every track keyzone to the full length of the keyboard in split/layer mode. A bit of a pain but I'm used to the simplicity of Cubase.

You have to do it manually, because you use PRESET performances - these can have complex layers and keyzons that you don't need.

Initial performance doesn't have these settings - so if you start from scracth - from a clean performance, you won't have to make such long settings.

Take a look at my reply to your question on the Roland discussion page.
