SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
I enjoy the simplicity of my Fantom XR,..I mean,...using the software editor I can do what I need easy enough. Been looking at the SRX cards,....not cheap. I can get the entire NI Komplete bundle for $50 more......
I feel hardware is more future proof which is what's stopping me. For recording what is the way you guys lean,..software or hardware. I realize I am asking on a hardware forum.
input help!!
thanks guys

Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
Komplete is far superior in terms of quality and number of patches. I've owned both SRX and Komplete and i can tell you that they are totally diferent products.
The only drawback in Komplete 7 is that you have to go down the software path, and get a good computer (MacBook Pro) and a good sound card with good preamplifiers.
So basically it's a decision between quality versus simplicity.
Me i've never been to much convinced by my SRX, it just seems an unfinished product (except the ethnic one, that's a keeper!).
Hope i could help.

Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
Thanks I use a Mac Pro and Kontakt right now...... I guess the thing is I'm worried I'll be paralyzed by the choices of having 5 zillion patches to audition.
Sounds like you are saying the SRX cards don't cut it as far as sound quality. I surprised at this,...I had heard they were top notch.
I have a JD 990 with the vintage synth card,...I like that synth the filters sound great,..better than most sounds in Kontakt at least....for the most part.

@ PMcCMusic
SRX: Ok, the SRX cards some years ago and till now for some sounds are very good sounding. Those cards gives you instant access to sounds without hazzle. As an owner of a Fantom all the 4 slots are full and I enjoy them still today. But as you see ROLAND newest products don't support SRX anymore and I think sooner than later they will dissapear from the market. The other problem with the SRX is the price, so for the price of two SRX cards you will get NI Komplete!
NI Komplete: There are million of sounds in there and you can get lost with experimenting, but the quality is as good than with the SRX and the price of this product is amazing!!
So, for using a workstation I would go software with Komplete.
My thoughts are today as following:
Workstation: Software based.
Synthesizer: Hardware based.
And if you need a good ROMpler for the gig, the JunoGi or a used Fantom X would be at a good price/performance tag.
Cheers

Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
PMcCMusic, I hope you are not talking about a pirated Komplete for $50... that is not allowed here on Roland Clan.
My opinion is that SRX cards have fantastic quality. And if you enjoy the sound of your XR, why not expanding it and working with it more?
I do not think you can compare that to Komplete though, because that package has like 100 times more stuff inside. Which will be harder to grasp also. The advantage of SRX sounds is that they don't take any time to load. They may have less detail than the big-memory Kontakt sounds, but they have their charisma which is quite important.

Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
Pay for pirate software? I thought that only happened in subtropical asia?
Nah, he said $50 more. all good.
One thing I'll add is that with SRX card your XR becomes all the more powerful with additional waveforms. So not only does it give you instant access to new patches, but enhances your creative experience with new sounds too. XR + 6 SRX boards =D

Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
$50 more, agh my apologies... eyes are too tired today.
Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
yeah,..I have Kontakt 4 so the crossgrade to Komplete 7 for me is $299.....
That's 50 bucks more than an srx card.....I dunno,...I do like the simplicity of the Fantom XR but,...
The 50 difference makes me lean toward the Komplete,....I dunno.....?

Hi PMcCMusic!
I love the SRX series boards! (and own all of them except the SRX-11)
Instant access to these patches with the ability to 'tweak' them to your personal liking, without forcing a further unnecessary load on your CPU is something worth considering. The 'Pirates' song uses the SRX-06 exclusively. What kind of music do you work with?
Cheers!

Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
I'm a gtr player mainly some synth, drums, gtr synth though, which works great for my limited key prowess.
I do a lot of stuff,.sounds I dig most are prog and analog synths. I have a JD990 with the vinage key card, and I love the sound of that synth,...great filters...
I hear the Key srx is supposed to be a version of that for the XR,...I suppose itd be a duplicate set but I like the software editor for ease so,...I also thought world would be different to have....
dunno?

Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
thanks,..I listened in,...you know,...thankfully for me I like sounds that seem timeless. But I really have to say,.geeez,.....
I remember having the "session exp board" like 20 years ago with my JV1010,...old card.

Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
"New" doesn't always equates to "better". Especially when "better" is subjective to your taste of music genre and style. I've never been impressed by software synths. While their sound fidelity is sometimes superior their expressiveness is somewhat lacking. I've always had the impression that software counterparts have been designed and created by engineers, not by musicians. If you prefer the mouse over the keyboard (not computer keyboard! ), then software is your solution.
I launched a debate some time ago "fidelity versus expressiveness" - I still prefer expressiveness and miss the old times when you had poly aftertouch, breath control, etc.

Re: SRX card,...or NI Komplete?
Poly aftertouch, how I would love to try that! I've actually been thinking of building my own poly-aftertouch keyboard with a Hall-effect sensor underneath each key.
It must be great to play strings on something like that, either synth strings or sampled ones like those from SRX-04 or something from SRX-06 which I both have and really love playing with.
