Which memory card for Fantom X

Post by keys »

Trying to get to the bottom of why I am unable to save and reload samples onto card. I have the normal card adaptor and use a 1GB SD card. I've also tried a 512MB card.
i asked Roland tech support and a senior product specialist said --
"In my experience, I always recommend a direct Compact Flash card and adaptor..."
I think the adaptors are mainly universal - mine is just an "all in one"
Could anyone advise what they use - before I take a chance and spend the money to get a Compact Flash Card and a specific "Compact Flash Card Adaptor"
Is using an Sd card a dodgy option?

With thanks for any help

Hey there, keys, I think that I answered that same question in the last few weeks and I think it is also in the Faq. Have you done a search on this on this sub-forum for perhaps "adapter compact flash type"?

Another reply. I had some trouble with a "universal" adaptor, spent some ridiculous time having a geek freind analyze it, then gave up, bought a CF adaptor on ebay, (cheap) and it works fine.
Also have a couple of dedicated SD adaptors. Work fine
Moral: don't use 3 in 1 or similar.

I need to get a cf card adaptor for my x6. The cheap ones on ebay say in the listings say they are compatible with windows upto xp, but I'm running windows 7 ultimate. Will they work for me?

Uhm, aren't you just going to use the adapter in the X6? If that is the case then I think you just need to make sure the adapter is compatible with the X6, not with your specific flavour of Windows. When I want to back up the card or move files around on it I actually put the compact flash card in a USB card reader as I dont like accessing the card through the USB port in the Fantom as I found that to be a little glitchy.

Well, I've just ordered a Roland 1GB memory card off ebay. I assume by your answer that this will just plug straight into the fantom "as is" no adaptor needed. I need the card adaptor (I think) to plug the card into the pc card slot on my laptop as Ive downloaded the vox human sample from Vstream, this needs to be put onto a cf card to load into the fantom. Make sense ?

No no, you still need an adapter if it is a compact flash card as you put the card into the adapter which you then stick it into the memory card slot in the X6. I guess I wasn't 100% clear but I didn't think you needed to worry about the compatibility of the adapter card with your computer if you only use it in the X6. The point I am making though is that you still need it in the X6. What kind of card did you get?

Thanks for your help. I've just ordered a 1GB Roland one off ebay. I've just found another card adaptor on ebay that is PCMCIA type 2 complient. I need to load the Vstream polymoog vox humana sample I've downloaded.

Ok, I think we should be good now. In case others want the reference, here is the listing of the memory card requirements in the Faq.

Well, i received the cf card adapter, the other day, the cf memory card is coming from the US so will take some time to get here I guess. Anyway, I thought I would have a fiddle around with it, so I stuck in the pc card slot on ny laptop but it doesn't show...now this might seem a stupid question, and properly is, but do I need the cf card IN the adaptor for it to show up as a drive on my laptop?

It will not show up till you have a card in it.

Hi. Got my Roland 1GB cf card today. Its brand new in a plastic case!. Question, before I try and put the vox human samples (2 program) on it, (I'm new to this) do I have to format it on the fantom first. Also, do I have to copy the samples/2programs to the user memory of the fantom?.

Format the card in/with the Fantom, it will format the card and make some folders on it for you to place your stuff in. Once the stuff is in the right folders on the card, just reboot the Fantom.
