Removing a built-in dynamic swell from a string patch

Hi all,

There's a string patch I'm using that has a slight crescendo built in/programmed into the note as you sustain it, I'm wondering if it's possible to remove that crescendo?

The patch is from 042 StudioString from the Complete Orchestra expansion board.

The patch uses all the tones, Tone 1 thru 4, so you will have to do the following to all of them

Select the patch. Press the EDIT PATCH button, then F6 ProEdit
Use F2 to move to TVA ENV.
You can see the envelope shape at the bottom of the screen.
The TVA attack goes to 100 (L1) with time 0 (T1) .
Then there is a swell to 127 (L2) the in time 60 (T2)
Then there is a decay 80 (T3) to the sustain level 85 (L3)
Finally a release to 0 level in 45 (T4)

So you can raise the attack level L1 to the same as L2 (127) or L2 to L1 (100)
Or you could change the swell time (T2) to 0 so it happens straight away.

The Fantom has a TVA ADSR with extra elements at the start of the sound.
To make the TVA envelope an ADSR just make T2 = 0 and L1 = L2 = 127

Use F8 to move between the four Tones.

Don't forget to save to a USER preset.

One more question - the patch dies away in volume after a time, which parameter/s do I adjust to make it sustain until I take my finger off the key?

I think you should study about ADSR envelope since it is at the very basis of creating sounds for about any existing synths.(Well, this is for any synths using subtractive synthesis but this is beyond your question) Maybe start reading there: https://www.wikiaudio.org/adsr-envelope/or there https://blog.landr.com/adsr-envelopes-infographic/

Note that the above are describing the amplitude envelope, referred as TVA on the Fantom. The same concept also apply for the filter envelope, aka TVF on the Fantom, but this is a bit harder to grasp as the TVF envelope doesn't affect the amplitude (volume) of the sound but only how much filter is applied to the wave.

To specifically answer your question:

D (Decay) will control how long it takes for the sound to 'die away'
S (Sustain) will control the level it will reach after the decay time.

If S is set to the maximum the sound will maintain its full volume as long as you hold the key.


A few things to remember:

A, D and R are specified in time length
S is specified as a percent of the maximum amplitude

A, D an S are for the time the key is pressed
R is for when the key is released.
