What is the number of files that you have in the root of this card? Afaik the FX uses the DOS FAT system on the memory cards. The FAT system has a limit of the actual number of files that can live in the root of the drive. There is no such limit (that I know of) for the number of files in a directory so this may not apply since I believe the Fantom stores pretty much everything in several directories but you may want to check this.

Can you add a new file to the card from your PC?

im sure if i try drag and drop a file it will work
and all contents are in seperate directorys nothing in the root.
Though its probably the fx fault..
I formated the card in the fx

i suppose what i will have to do is back it up and format it on the pc.

Bug found!!!

Post by Joe Cogan »

Hey Quin...

I think I found the bug. It's DEFINITELY a problem with the FX. Here's a link to RolandUS stating it... http://www.rolandus.com/products/detail ... antom%2DX6

Can you believe it! They even mention the bug on their product page!!! And I quote:

"PC card slot for backing up samples and data with up to 1GB capacity."

Wow, the audacity of that company. Screwing the little guy once again....

BTW: Intel has only one L.

Huh, were do they state the bug?? I didn't get it. You're supposed to use cards with a maximum of 1GB storage space only, according with what they say.

My Lucky Day!

Post by MarkShovel »

Today, I got the:

Error
Card Area Full

message while saving samples to the flash card.

I have a 96MB card. Here is my memory status:
Sample 522MB (96.0% free)
User 30.5MB (95.5% free)
Card 62.9MB (67.2% free)

Fantom X8 V2.00

Any suggestions?

I got this (card full) message a while back and my card was not full.

My only solution was to copy everything off the card on to a computer and then wipe the card and start again.

Haven't had it since but it has made me a bit paranoid.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I just installed the 512MB SDRAM upgrade and started on a sampling spree. I only got ten stereo samples saved before the error message.

I'll buy a 1GB flash card tomorrow and start with a fresh format and see how far I get.

I also downloaded the V2.10 OS upgrade. I'll wait to install the OS upgrade.

I think I got that problem, too, once a while back, and I determined it was because I was deleting files using my PC, which I guess is taboo.

So I don't do that anymore -- only use the Fantoms for that -- and I've never had the problem again.

In general, I try to keep my card as clean as possible, saving my files to the PC regularly, and then deleting them.

I've found it makes a difference.

Not sure if this applies to ya'lls situation but, there have been times when I knew I had less than the max number of everything including card capacity and still experienced the message that you mention. I have however found that if I use write instead of save or save as blah blah blah, I always end up with my sample saved on my card. Not sure if this applies to you all but hmmm.
EDIT oh and remember that you must always have enough available space to have two copies of anything you are working with.

The only solution i found was to back up the contents of the card and then format the card
copy the contents back to the card and all was working again.

PC card usage

Post by MarkShovel »

I had just put the card in my PC Compact Card Reader and moved some sample data to clear space for my next sample session. I wanted to archive my first sample session and have maximum available space for my second sample session.

Da-Man's and Quinnx's comments suggests that I have somehow corrupted the Fantom file management table (Fantom FAT). So after a complete backup, I'll need to reformat the card to make it fully useful again.

So Diametro's suggesting that I copy my files to my PC, then use the Fantom to delete the files. This should allow the Fantom to keep track of the files correctly.

Should the USB interface be used for sample data management?

Is there any limit to the number of individual samples I can have on a card? It looked like I could keep incrementing the sample number past 400 and I decided to stop looking for the end of the sample numbers.

MarkShovel,

Doing file management may indeed cause issues. From the X manual:

Don't use your computer to move or delete folders in the Fantom X.

Don't use your computer to format or optimize user memory or memory card, or execute operations such as Scan Disk.

The File Utility function on the Fantom is to be used for file management according to the book, so I tend to think that this may apply to samples. Quinnx and a couple of other folks are the 'resident experts' on that stuff.

Weather or not moving or copying files to and from the fantom to the computer via usb causes file coruption i am unsure.
Although only recently i lost 1 months work when suddenly my card was blank and corrupt.
although i usualy backup regurly i think i left this to long before doing so.

so with this in mind

check out the following Beginners guide Chapter 2 (backup and go)
