New User confused about midi songs

I have a midi stick with songs which will play ok but once the play back starts I hoped to be able to randomly select a sound to join in with and maybe change the sound during the song-but as soon as I try to change the sound I have chosen to play along with the play back all changes and sound terrible. Where am I going wrong? Anyone help?

I am in exact situation as you are. I've learned from the manual that you cannot change the Performace during the playback of midi file. So, you have to create a Performance in advance with the patches you will need for a song and play with it during the entire song. That is all i know
