Win XP can't get the MIDI output port to show in port lists

The MIDI output port on my AX-Synth (USB Port) doesn't show up in any output port listings, even in the librarian and editor. MIDIOx too! Even installed the Roland (GW-8) driver.

I've deleted all the registry entries for MIDI and reinstalled devices but no change (in case the XP 10 device limit was the problem).

If nobody else has had this problem I 'm just gonna have to reinstall windows and all my devices and software again and start clean (every year or two). This time I'll keep it dedicated to the studio and turn networking on only to xfer files and keep my other apps (photoshop, work, a couple of games) off it, ior another partition and OS installation.
