Help: AX-09 change Midi channel output quickly

hey all,
I just acquired the Roland Ax-09 (lucina), and I can't figure out how to assign midi-channel changes to any of the on-board buttons. Following the manual instructions, I can change the midi channel output by:
holding shift, push 'v-link' until 'CHN' shows, then use the variation +/- to choose the channel, THEN hold 'write' until it stops blinking..
obviously this is not ideal for switching midi live..
Roland Support has been overwhelmingly NOT helpful.. maybe you guys can help.
