Akai iPad synthstation - is this the future?
Akai iPad synthstation - is this the future?
I am now really wondering if this is the future minimalist setup of an electronic musician. Essentially, iPad is a "detachable brain", so you can have this who rig while in your studio and take it to gigs, and with iPad in your bag you can compose and design sounds also on the go in a cafe or in a park. With apps like Akai SynthStation 2.0, Korg iMS-20, etc. and especially with audio copy/paste between them, this is a really great environment to work with and the sound palette can be expanded endlessly (and for cheap!) with new great apps appearing each month.
This is pretty exciting!

The SynthStation look sick but I would not consider it for the professional player. If you look at it as a portable keyboard/pad controller tool to use with the Ipad then yes. I would take the Alesis ioDock (wich was first callled StudioDock) and a professional controller for the real thing. Personally I can't se myself playing that keyboard size also because I have never liked Akai keyboard beds.
I'm on a cross road right now. I've been saving to get a Mac Mini but I can't help looking at the iPad as my nexttool. Once thing is certain, I can't have both :-(

Yes, I of course wouldn't buy this if it appears to be not a full-size keybed. But it seems to be a normal one, but gotta check.
Alesis ioDock is great if you already have a MIDI controller or another keyboard. But Akai's controller becomes like one thing with the iPad, so you don't need to have any extra cables like with ioDock.

BTW you should definitely go for Mac Mini first. iPad is a great device but it's like a dedicated synth whereas the Mac is a workstation, I think you understand the difference. While iPad is more fun than a Mac in several ways, it's not a replacement but a complimentary device.
I think for you it would be better go get the Mac Mini, as it's almost the same price anyway, but it will serve as a much more solid base for your future.

Yes, Artemiy, thanks for the advise. That's exactly what's holding my decision.it will serve as a much more solid base for your future.
But, damm, the iPad looks like a uber-f***ing-awsome-toy :-)
Re: Akai iPad synthstation - is this the future?
Hopefully with the time your Mac Mini saves you, you'll be able to earn more and afford the iPad too :-) My iMac really opened many life opportunities for me.

No! You do not want sheep around here. They will fleece you. They will pull the wool over your eyes. They are simply baaaad.Artemiy wrote:Yes, in addition to Grammar Wombat we also need censorship... I mean, Censor Sheep :-)
I do not wish to lock horns with you, Artemiy, but I need to ram this point home:
I can do the job!
Just make me a moderator… or, even better… give me the powers of a secret Clan agent. I will shepherd this flock towards the proper use of language. My big black pen is ready!
